Cold read practice you can actually do alone
Cold reading is a skill, and like any skill it decays without reps. The problem is that practicing it needs fresh material and a live partner. Actor Reader gives you the partner, so the only thing you have to find is the page.
What a cold read is really testing
Nobody expects a polished performance off a first look. They are watching whether you can take in a situation quickly, commit to a point of view, and stay in contact with the other person while your eyes are doing half the work.
That last part is where most cold reads fall apart. The eyes go down, the connection goes with them, and the read turns into narration.
Cold reading rewards the actor who decides fast and stays in contact. Both are trainable, and both need a partner to train against.
A practice loop that builds the reflex
- Find a page you have never read. Any script will do.
- Paste it in and assign the other role a voice.
- Take ten seconds. Decide who you are talking to and what you want.
- Run it once, all the way through, without stopping to fix anything.
- Run it again and change one thing on purpose.
Why the second pass matters
The first pass tells you what you do under pressure by default. The second tells you whether you can steer. Casting is deciding whether you are adjustable, and adjustability is what the second pass demonstrates.
Because the reader gives you the same cue both times, the difference between the two passes is entirely yours.
Common questions
How do you practice cold reading alone?
Use unfamiliar material and a reader that cues you live. Take ten seconds to decide who you are talking to and what you want, then run the page once without stopping. Repeat with new material rather than the same page.
How often should I practice cold reads?
Short and frequent beats long and rare. A single fresh page a day keeps the reflex alive better than an hour once a fortnight.
Where do I find material for cold read practice?
Any published script, play, or piece of copy you have not read works. The only requirement is that it is genuinely new to you.
