Monologue practice with someone in the room
A monologue is not a speech. It is one half of a scene where the other person stopped talking. Actor Reader gives you the line that sets it off and the presence to play it at, so the piece has somewhere to land.
Why monologues go flat in a bedroom
Rehearsed alone, a monologue slowly turns into a recitation. The rhythm smooths out, the intention drifts toward general emotion, and by the time you get to the room you are performing a shape rather than talking to a person.
The fix is not more repetition. It is putting something on the other side of it.
Every monologue is addressed to somebody. Rehearse it to nobody enough times and that is who it will sound like it is for.
How to set it up
- Paste the monologue with the line that prompts it, even if you have to write that line yourself.
- Assign the other character a voice that fits who you are talking to.
- Let the cue play, then answer it. Do not start until it lands.
- Run it again with a voice that changes who you think you are talking to.
What to listen for
- The first beat: are you answering something, or launching?
- The turns: where does the argument change direction, and does it change out loud?
- The end: is it a conclusion, or is it the moment you gave up trying?
- The length: does anything in the middle exist only because you memorized it?
Common questions
How do you practice a monologue by yourself?
Give it a partner. Include the line that prompts the monologue, have a reader play it, and answer that line rather than starting cold. The piece stops being a recitation the moment it has someone to be aimed at.
Should I practice a monologue the same way every time?
No. Run it against different voices and different assumptions about who you are talking to. A monologue that only works one way is a monologue that will not survive a redirect in the room.
How long should an audition monologue be?
Follow the brief you were given. When there is none, most rooms are decided inside 90 seconds, so pick a piece you can play fully in that window.
